Softball gains split with Lake Superior State

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College and Lake Superior State University split a softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lakers took the opening game 1-0 in eight innings, while Catawba held on to with the second game 5-3. Catawba now stands 7-4-1 on the year, while the Lakers are 1-1.The opening game was a pitching duel between LSSU’s Jean Pergande and Catawba’s Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD). The Lakers loaded the bases in the second with one out but failed to score. That was the best scoring chance for the visitors until getting runners to second and third with two outs in the seventh. Phelps was able to induce a groundout to end that threat. Catawba had its first two runners on base in the second and sixth, but also could not score. In the bottom of the seventh, Catawba had runners at second and third with two outs and nearly won the game, but Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) was called out at first on a bang-bang play to end the inning. The Lakers loaded the bases with no outs in the eight, but only got one run on a bases loaded walk with no outs. Catawba would also load the bases with no outs in its eighth, but failed to get the tying run home. Catawba scored early in the second game, getting a one-out triple by Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL), who scored on a single by Jen Ropp (Broadway, VA). Rivera led off the third with a double and was driven home on a grounder by Jackie Carson (Summerland Key, FL). Megan Rosser (Glen Birnie, MD) drove home Carson with a two-out double. The Lady Indians built a 5-1 lead heading into the seventh, but LSSU stagged a rally. The Lakers first two batters reached on hits and a one-out error led to one run, while a second scored on a shallow fly ball to trim the lead to 5-3. The tying run reached on an error before Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) retired the final batter on a ground ball to second. The win raised the freshman’s record to 3-0. Rivera went 3-for-3 with two runs in the second game for Catawba and had four hits for the doubleheader. McDowell had two hits in the opener for the Lady Indians. Bridget LaMarre went 3-for-4 in the opener and 2-for-3 in the nightcap for Lake Superior State. Kim Klever had three hits and an RBI in the opener for the Lakers. #######
