Women's Soccer Cruises to 6-0 Win Over Coker
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got goals from six players in a 6-0 win over visiting Coker in women’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 10-3-2, while the Cobras fall to 4-10-1.
Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, MD/Beall HS) opened the scoring in the third minute, converting a through ball from Alexandra Beshk (Mission Viejo, CA/Mission Viejo HS) for the early lead. The Lady Indians’ next two goals came via the corner kick on headers by Beshk and Alyssa Schoenberg (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury HS). Carrie Wollaston (Landenberg, PA/Ursuline Academy) had the assist on both goals to give Catawba a 3-0 lead at the half.
Catawba also scored three times in the final stanza. Lainey Nichols (Frederick, MD/Middletown HS) scored just over two minutes into the second half and freshman Rochelle Poncin (Bradenton, FL/IMG Academy) scored her first career goal off a corner kick from Andrea Dunshie (Apex, NC/SE Raleigh HS). Alexa Baird (Plainfield, NJ/Mt. St. Mary’s Academy) closed out the scoring, taking a pass from Lindsay Hinkle (Highland, MD/River Hill HS).
Chelsea Binder (Woodstock, MD/Mount Hebron HS) made a pair of saves in recording the shutout for Catawba. Margaret McCoy (Columbia, SC) had five saves in 66 minutes of action in the Coker net. Carrie Hudnell (Goose Creek, SC) closed out the match and made a pair of saves. Catawba held a 23-2 edge in shots.
“We had a good all-around performance tonight,” stated Catawba coach John Cullen. “Getting goals from that many people is a great sign of moving the ball around. I though some of our goals were very high quality, the strike from Lainey [Nichols] was as good as you will see at any level. We’re pleased to win at home, pleased to keep a clean sheet and it sets up nicely for a strong weekend at Lincoln Memorial.”
