06_volleyball_0034

WINGATE, NC -- Wingate won its 17th straight match with a three-game sweep over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Cuddy Arena.  The Bulldogs improve to 26-1 overall and 10-0 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 30-21, 30-25 and 30-27.  The Catawba Indians fall to 21-6 and 6-5.

Senior setter Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC/Swansboro HS) set a new Catawba career mark for assists with 35 against the Bulldogs.  It raised her total to 3,765 to better the record of 3,761 set by Selena Wilkes.  Henderson set her record in just three seasons with the Lady Indians.

Lauren Billo (Orland Park, IL) led the way for Wingate with 15 kills, while hitting .423 for the match (15 kills, 4 errors, 26 attempts).  Rebecca Bloemer (Louisville, KY) and Stormi Gale (Richmond, TX) added 12 and 10 kills, respectively.  Setter Melissa DeLuca (Bahama, NC) handed out 48 assists, while racking up 19 digs for the Bulldogs.

For Catawba, Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) had a game-high 16 kills, while Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) added 12 kills and a game-high 20 digs.

Wingate came out hot in the first game, jumping out to a 10-5 lead.  The Lady Indians would come back to cut it to one at 12-11, but two kills from Gale gave Wingate a cushion.  The Bulldogs got out to a 19-16 lead then went on an 8-2 run, highlighted by three more kills from Gale, and two from Billo.  Wingate hit .364 in the first match, while Catawba hit .227.

The second game would remain tight throughout, with 14 ties and six lead changes.   After Catawba took a 20-19 lead on a kill from Lo the Bulldogs once again turned to Billo, who had three consecutive kills to give Wingate a 22-20 lead.  The lead would not get below two the rest of the game, with Wingate hitting .241 compared to Catawba’s .073.

In game three, the Lady Indians had a 12-10 lead and got three consecutive kills from Powers to extend the lead to five.  The Bulldogs, trailing 21-17, got back-to-back kills from Bloemer then cut it to one on a Catawba attack error.  After a Catawba point made it 22-20, Wingate would take control of the game with a 6-0 run.  Billo had two kills and a block in the run.
