Smith's two-out single in ninth, Southard's cycle propel Baseball to wild win

SALISBURY, NC -- Freshman Matt Smith’s (Brown’s Summitt, NC) two-out single in the bottom of the ninth lifted Catawba to a dramatic 13-12 come-from-behind win over visiting Belmont Abbey in baseball action on Thursday night at Newman Park. The win improves Catawba to 9-5, while Belmont Abbey falls to 9-7.With one out in the ninth, Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) reached when Crusader centerfielder Andy Simpson dropped his fly ball. He stole third, but was unable to score on Blair Reynolds; (King, NC) groundout. After Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) was hit by a pitch, Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) tied the game with a single. Hill stole third and scored on Smith’s single to center to win the game. Belmont Abbey had scored four run its ninth to erase a three-run deficit and take a 12-11 lead. A home run by Brad Lane cut the margin to 12-11 and after reliever Chris Abernathy (Claremont, NC) struck out two batters, Ian Gibson homered to tie the scored. Two infield hits was followed by Simpson’s bloop single to center to give the Crusaders the lead. Catawba had snapped a 8-8 tie in the eight with a three-run inning. Southard led off with a triple, giving him the cycle and just the third ever by a Catawba player. Reynolds had record the second, and the first in 54 years just two days ago against Belmont Abbey. Reynolds drove home Southard on a long fly to right that was dropped, allowing Reynolds to take third, where he scored on another error. Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) drove home the final run of the inning. The Indians opened the scoring on Josh Jordan’s (Gastonia, NC) two-run double in the second and led got two-run homers from Southard in the fourth and Baker in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead. Belmont Abbey scored four times in the sixth and twice in the seventh to tie the game at 8-8. Southard led the Tribe offense, going 4-for-6 with four runs and three RBI. Baker was 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Jordan was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Reynolds collected two more doubles, raising his season total to 13, just seven shy of the school record in only 14 games. Barreras collected three hits and a pair of RBI for the Crusaders, while Mike Ey had two hits and three RBI. The game capped a wild week between the teams as they combined for 63 runs and 80 hits in two games. On Tuesday, Catawba won 23-15 as the teams combined for 48 hits. #######
