Tough Second Half Dooms Women's Soccer at LMU
HARROGATE, TN -- Lincoln Memorial scored four unanswered second half goals and defeated visiting Catawba 6-2 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Field. With the win, the Lady Railsplitters improve to 10-4 and 3-2 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 10-4-2 and 4-2-1.
Catawba scored early in the fifth minute as Alexandra Beshk (Mission Viejo, CA/Mission Viejo HS) delivered her 11th goal of the season on a through ball from Alexa Baird (Plainfield, NC/Mt. St. Mary’s Academy). Lincoln Memorial answered with a pair of goals over a five minute span, taking the lead on a strike from Heloisa de Oliveira.
Catawba equalized 10 minutes before the half as Alyssa Schoenberg (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury HS) delivered off a long free kick from Carrie Wollaston (Landenberg, PA/Ursuline Academy). Lincoln Memorial picked up the game-winner from Patty Spielman on the hour and added three more goals in the final 20 minutes. Two of the three were on penalty kicks in the 70th and 72nd minutes. De Oliveira scored on one and added the final goals for the hat trick.
“The game was fairly balanced in the first half, but things got away from us after the half,” said Catawba coach John Cullen. “They had two penalty kicks within three minutes that took the life out of us and virtually sealed the game. We lost a little discipline and composure in the second half. It’s disappointing, but we need to finish the regular season strong and get ready for the conference tournament.”
