Men's Soccer Grabs Win on Senior Night
Snaps seven-game losing streak with 2-1 win
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba claimed a 2-1, hard-fought win over visiting Belmont Abbey in men’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians snap a six-match losing streak on senior night and improve to 6-10. The Crusaders fall to 11-7.
Catawba grabbed the early lead off a corner kick in the fourth minute. Senior Ryan Villiard (Halliday, FL/Mitchell HS) delivered a perfect ball to sophomore brother Chad Villiard (Holiday, FL/Mitchell HS), who headed home the goal past a helpless Belmont Abbey keeper.
The Crusaders would get the tying goal in the 21th minute as Luis Arrieta (Medellin, COLOMBIA) put home a cross from Michael Scharville (Wake Forest, NC). The Indians would pick up the game-winner at the 29:59 mark as senior Garth McCormack (Charlotte, NC/C. Cabarrus HS) collected a missed clear and just snuck a shot from the top of the box inside the far post.
Catawba survived the second half, playing down a man for the final 21 minutes. The game featured 35 fouls with seven cards, including two to Catawba’s Nathan Brown (Huntersville, NC/Hopewell HS) that resulted in the ejection. Ross Willard (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS) made two saves in the first half for Catawba with Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) stopping one shot in the final half.
