Women's Basketball drops SAC semifinal to Presbyterian

HICKORY, N.C. --- Second-seeded Presbyterian College used a huge advantage at the free throw line and defeated third-seed Catawba 71-67 in semifinal action on Friday night at the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Multi Purpose Complex at Catawba Valley Community College. Presbyterian improves to 21-7 with the win, while the Lady Indians fall to 21-7. The Lady Indians will have to wait until Sunday to see if they will receive a long shot at-large bid to the NCAA II regionals. Catawba held the lead for much of the last half before Presbyterian eventually took the lead at 57-56 on a three-pointer by Toni Leopard with 6:09 remaining. Ashley Cox gave the Lady Indians their last lead at 58-57 on a layin with 5:29 left. Ella Pasola tied the game for Catawba at 61-61 at the 4:46 mark, but Nicole Chittam answered with a three-pointer for Presbyterian to put the Lady Blue Hose up for good at 64-61 with 4:46 left. Catawba closed to within a point at 66-65 on a layin by Pasola and the Lady Indians had a chance to tie near the end, but Isiaette Darden’s three-pointer was blocked by Birnie. Leopard led all scorers with 25 for the Lady Blue Hose. Birnie added 15, while Chittam had 14 off the bench.. Catawba got 15 points from Danyel Locklear and a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds from Dorthell Little. Pasola, the only Catawba senior, added 11. The Blue Hose won the game at the free throw line, where they made good on 22-of-31 attempts, while Catawba hit just 3-of-6. The Lady Blue Hose also made seven three-pointers to two for Catawba. Presbyterian was 18-of-22 in the last half after reaching the bonus at the 14:56 mark. #####
