Women's Soccer Rolls to 7-0 Win Over Brevard
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba rolled to a 7-0 win over visiting Brevard in women’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 12-4-2, while the Tornados fall to 4-13-1.
Alexandra Beshk (Mission Viejo, CA/Mission Viejo HS) gave Catawba the lead with her team-leading 13th goal of the season, taking a through ball from Alyssa Schoenberg (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury HS) in the 19th minute. Andrea Dunshie (Apex, NC/SE Raleigh HS) added a second goal before the break on a strike at the top of the box.
Catawba would add five goals after the break. Freshman Kenley Streetman (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) scored six minutes into the half for the first of career. Nikki Blackwelder (Asheville, NC/Asheville HS) headed home a free kick from Lauren Whiteley (Greensboro, NC/SE Guilford) just before the hour and Carrie Wollaston (Landenberg, PA/Ursuline Academy) put home a free kick at the top of the box at the 63:36 mark for a 5-0 lead.
Streetman added a second goal in the 75th minute and Brittany Adam (Oakton, VA/Flint Hill HS) picked up her first career goal on a penalty kick in the 86th minute. Catawba held a 21-2 edge in shots with Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC/NW Guilford) making one save over 86 minutes of action.
Catawba will return to action on Wednesday in the South Atlantic Conference tournament. The Lady Indians will host a first round match against a team to be determined following Lincoln Memorial’s match with Wingate on Sunday. Catawba currently shares first place in the league with Newberry, one point ahead of LMU.
“It was a great night for the seniors and the team to end the regular season,” said Catawba coach John Cullen. “We played some nice soccer and scored some nice goals. To go undefeated at home is also very pleasing. The only negative tonight was the injury to Andrea [Dunshie] and wish her well on her recovery and hope to get her back on the field soon. I would like to give a special thank you to the seniors for leading the team on and off the field in so many ways this season.”
