Men's Soccer Ends Season WIth SAC Tourney Loss to LMU
HARROGATE, TN -- Top-seeded Lincoln Memorial advanced to the semifinals of the Food Lion South Atlantic Men’s Soccer Tournament with a 4-0 win over eighth-seeded Catawba on Tuesday afternoon at Gibbs Field. The Railsplitters improve to 14-3-1, while the Catawba Indians end their season at 7-12.
Jimmy Vandenhurk (Walland, TN) broke a scoreless tie in the 32nd minute and picked up a ball from a defender and chipped it into the back left side of the net to put LMU on top 1-0. Catawba would stay within a goal until the final 20 minutes. Leonardo de Barros (Brasilia, Brazil) gave the Railsplitters an insurance goal in the 73rd minute as he took a short pass in front of the goal from teammate Claudio Rico (Jacarei, Brazil).
De Barros scored again with help from Leandro Pereira (Brasilia, Brazil) on a ricochet off the crossbar in the 75th minute and got the final goal in the 81st minute on an unassisted breakaway by forward Leandro Pereira, who notched his twentieth goal of the season with the score. Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) went the entire 90 minutes in goal for Catawba, denying seven of LMU's eleven shots-on-goal. Lincoln Memorial’s Brent Cole (Knoxville, TN) recorded the shutout by tallying five saves.
