Houston Scores 29 in Men's Basketball Exhibition Win Over Kazakhstan
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba defeated the Astana Tigers of Kazakhstan 90-75 in a men’s basketball exhibition game on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. Sophomore Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) led the Catawba Indians with 29 points, including a 6-for-6 effort from behind the arc.
Catawba never trailed and broke away from a 7-7 tie on a jumper by Norman Monroe (Newport News, VA/Heritage HS), a three-pointer by Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) and a free throw by Houston for a 13-7 edge. The Indians would push the lead to 16 in the opening frame at 36-20 and settled for a 47-39 lead at the break.
Kazakhstan cut the margin to 51-44 early in the second half, but a free throw by Monroe and two jumpers by Houston pushed the lead back to double-digits where it would stay the rest of the game. Catawba’s biggest lead was 90-68 in the closing minutes.
Monroe followed Houston in the scoring column for Catawba with 13 points and nine rebounds. Fields and Donald Rutherford (Morganton, NC/Freedom HS) each had 11 points. Sergey Smirnov led Astana with 17 points, while Anton Ponomarev posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Rustam Yargaliev also reached double figures with 13 points.
