Softball gains split in two tournament games

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College split a pair of games at the Catawba Invitational Softball Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The Lady Indians, now 8-5-1, fell to Kutztown 8-4 on Saturday morning at Salisbury Community Park and topped Queens, NY, 12-4 on Sunday at Whitley Field. Most of the tournament games were washed away due to the weather, but there were a few games completed. In addition to the Catawba game on Saturday, Lees-McRae defeated Barton 6-5 and Lake Superior bead Shepherd 7-2. On Sunday, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville beat Barton 15-0, Pfeiffer topped Queens,NY, 16-8 and Kutztown defeated SIU-Edwardsville 5-4. For Catawba, the Lady Indians on Saturday grabbed the early on Kutztown, scoring twice in the opening inning. Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) came home on a wild pitch, while Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) drew a bases loaded walk to force home the second. Kutztown got a solo home run in the second and a two-run shot in the fifth to lead 3-2, but Catawba came back in its fifth to regain the advantage. With two out and no one on, Vivian Lee (Salisbury, NC) drew a walk, Cari Griffin (Olney, MD) singled and Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) walked to load the bases. Rivera followed with a two-run single, one of her three hits, to give Catawba a 4-3 lead. Kutztown tied the game in the sixth, then scored four times in the seventh, three on a home run by Courtney Memmo for its 8-4 lead. Catawba loaded the bases in its seventh, but could not score. Catawba overcame an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Queens, NY, on Sunday. After allowing a pair of runs in the top of the first, Rivera doubled in the bottom of the inning to begin the Lady Indian rally. She would score on a single by Jess Gimbel (King George, VA). Catawba would break the game open in the third, scoring six times. Jackie Carson (Summerland Key, FL) led off with a double and scored on a single by Gimbel. After a walk to load the bases, Megan Rosser (Glen Birnie, MD) singled home two to put Catawba on top 4-2. After anther walk, Griffin was hit by a pitch to force home a run and after two groundouts, Carson singled home the final two runs of the inning. Carson collected three hits and drove home three for Catawba, while Gimbel had two hits and two RBI. Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) allowed just two earned runs over six innings to improve her record to 4-0. #######
