Griffith Serves Up Nine Aces as Volleyball Sweeps Brevard
BREVARD, NC -- Catawba picked up a three-game sweep over host Brevard in volleyball action on Wednesday night at Boshamer Gym. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 30-21, 30-13 and 30-24 to improve to 23-6. The Tornados fall to 15-14.
Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) put down 13 kills for Catawba, while fellow junior Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) served up a career-high nine aces in the win. Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) also reached double digits in kills with 11.
Brevard led early in the opening game at 4-3, but Griffith served up two of her aces in a run that gave Catawba a 7-4 edge. Jasmine Chunn (Yadkinville, NC/Forbush HS) later had a pair of kills in a six-point run as the Lady Indians grabbed a 14-7 edge. A 13-5 run pushed the lead to 29-17 before a late Brevard rally including a pair of aces from Jami Perry, but Lindsey Spears (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes HS) killed off the final point.
Catawba took control early in the second game. A Powers kill got the serve to Griffith, who recorded four aces in a run that put the Lady Indians up 10-4. Lo had four kills in the game in which Catawba hit at 57%.
Game three was tight, but Griffith helped Catawba get the advantage with a five-point run on her serve for a 17-13 lead. Leading 24-21, the Lady Indians got a kill from Kalin Collier (Rural Hall, NC/N. Forsyth HS) and three points on Griffith’s serve for a 28-21 lead. Powers got the kill on match point.
Brooke Seaman had a dozen kills and four blocks to lead Brevard, while Brittany Holliday had 11 digs. Perry added 19 assists to her two aces.
