Records Fall as Football Takes 56-21 Win at Brevard

BREVARD, NC -- Catawba rolled up 528 yards of offense and overcame four turnovers to take a 56-21 win over host Brevard in football action on Saturday afternoon at Brevard Memorial Stadium.  The win lifts the 13th-ranked Catawba Indians to 9-1, while the Tornados fall to 2-8.  The 56 points help set a new scoring record for Catawba with 438 this season, surpassing the old mark of 403 set in 2004.

Brad Roach (Williamston, NC/Williamston HS) threw three interceptions, but also had three touchdown passes to tie the record of Luke Samples, who threw 21 in both 2003 and 2004.  Junior George Bell (Fayetteville, NC/Britt HS) rushed for 87 yards on nine carries and his fourth-quarter scoring run set a pair of Tribe records.  He eclipses a 70+ year-old record with his 16th rushing touchdown and his 17th score broke Mario Crowe’s 2004 mark of 16 total scores.  The rushing record was set in 1930 by George Zengale and equaled in 1935 by Red Meehan.  He ties the 1948 scoring record of Lee Spears with 104 points.

Catawba was intercepted on its first drive deep in Tornado territory, but after the defense held Brevard on downs the Indians scored on their next five possession of the half to grab a 35-7 lead at the break.  Travis Landrun (Inman, SC/Chapman HS) and Brent Johnson (Hickory, NC/Hickory HS) each had 16-yard catches from Roach for a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Brevard got on the board at the 11:52 mark of the second quarter on a one-yard pass from Trey Wilborn to Seth Corliss, but Landrum returned the ensuing kickoff 45 yards to the Tornado 43.  A third straight run by Jamelle Cuthbertson (Charlotte, NC/Harding HS) produced a 34-yard score and a 21-7 edge.  Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC/New Bern HS) scored from seven yards out with 4:32 left in the half then caught a 19-yard pass from Roach with two seconds before the break.

The Tornados got scores in the third quarter on a John Taylor run and a Wilborn pass to Derek Church around a 37-yard strike from Roach to Johnson to leave the score 42-21.  Bell would get his record-breaking score with 6:31 left on a four-yard run and Antonio Hall (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford HS) closed out the scoring with 2:38 to play on a one-yard run.

Catawba had 291 yards rushing, getting 87 from Bell, 73 from Fisher and 66 from Cuthbertson.  Roach had 237 yards on 15-of-24 passing with Johnson hauling in seven passes for 119 yards.  Wilborn ran for 112 yards for the Tornados and completed 6-of-8 passes for 70 yards.  Brevard had one interception and lost five of nine fumbles.
