Volleyball Drops Another Five-Game Match

Collier, Moran record career-high kills numbers

PEMBROKE, NC -- Host UNC Pembroke defeated Catawba in five games in volleyball action on Tuesday night at Jones Arena.  The Lady Braves won by the scores of 30-27, 22-30, 30-23, 23-30 and 15-12 to improve to 20-16.  The Catawba Indians fall to 24-8.

Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) led Catawba with 20 kills and was one of four players to reach double figures in kills.  Kalin Collier (Rural Hall, NC/N. Forsyth HS) registered a career-high with 18 kills, while freshmen Lindsey Spears (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes HS) and Katie Moran (Northville, MI/Northville HS) posted 13 and 10 kills, respectively.  The 10 kills for Moran was a career-high as was her six blocks.

A six-point run early in the opening game gave UNCP a 14-10 lead.  Catawba closed within 19-18, but the Lady Braves stayed on top with a 5-1 run.  Down 27-21, Catawba pulled to within 28-27, but an attack error and a kill by Jessica Hartley accounted for the final points.  Catawba used kills by Collier, Spears and Moran to go up 8-5 in game two and led from there.  An ace by Griffith gave Catawba a 25-19 lead and the Lady Indians finished off the game on a block and kill by Moran.

UNC Pembroke used a 14-2 run to take control of game three, taking an 18-11 lead.  Hartley had five kills in the run.  Catawba would chip away and cut the deficit to 23-22, but a 5-0 run by UNCP, including two kills by Tiara Anderson, helped secure the game win.  Catawba pulled away from a 19-19 tie in game four to even the match.  A five-point run gave the Lady Indians a 25-19 edge.  The Lady Indians won the final four points, the last three coming on a kill and two blocks from Spears.

The Lady Braves scored the first five points of the deciding game.  Catawba rallied from an 8-2 deficit on three straight kills by Griffith, but UNCP scored four of the next five points to go up 12-6.  The Lady Indians would again get close at 13-12, using a run with three kills by Collier and two aces by Tiffany Andrassy (Raleigh, NC/Sanderson HS).  An attack error and an ace by Lizzie O’Connor gave Pembroke the winning points.

Boca HS) posted a career-high 42 digs.  Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC/Swansboro HS) had a double-double with 66 assists and 13 digs.  Collier also recorded a double-double with 12 digs and her 18 kills.  Anderson led UNCP with 20 kills.  Hartley had 17 kills and five blocks, while Andrena Laza recorded 47 digs.
