Drakes Sets Two Backstroke Marks at Wingate Swim Meet
WINGATE, NC -- Catawba finished third behind host Wingate and NCAA I Gardner-Webb in both men’s and women’s swimming action at a tri-meet on Saturday at the Wingate University Pool. Catawba’s men totaled 38 points to 90 for Wingate and 71 for Gardner-Webb. The Lady Indians had 18 points with Gardner-Webb picking up 105 and Wingate 77.
Patrik Drakes (Stockholm, SWEDEN) set a pair of school records on the men’s side. He swam 28.05 in the 50 back to lower the mark by nearly a second and had a time of 2:02.72 in the 200 back, taking eight seconds off the previous standard. Drakes took top honors in the 200 breast (2:15.01) and nearly won the 200 back, but was beat by .02 seconds.
Corey Rogers Spartanburg, SC/Dorman HS) was second for the men in the 200 breast (2:18.40), while Alex Walpole (Simpsonville, SC/Hillcrest HS) was second in the 500 free (5:09.85).
Leigh Spada (Shelby, NC/Shelby HS) had a pair of second place finishes on the women’s side. She had a time of 1.58.90 in the 200 free, losing by less than a second, and also was runner-up in the 100 free (55.43), just a half second off the winning time. Spada also had a third place swim in the 50 free (26.00).
