Baseball shells Pittsburgh-Johnstown in doubleheader sweep

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Pittsburgh-Johnstown in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Newman Park defeating the Mountain Cats 15-3 and 10-2. The wins improve Catawba to 11-5, while UPJ falls to 5-3. Catawba jumped on the visitors in the opener with seven runs over the first two frames. Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) hit a two-run homer in the first, while Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) added a two-run shot in the second. Israel Morrow (Claremont, NC) added a two-run home run in the fifth and the Tribe tacked on five more runs in the sixth. Tribe starter Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC) was touched up for a two-run homer by Rick Baxter (Sidman, PA) in the fifth, but easily pciked up his third win in four decisions on the mound. Over his five innings, the sophomore scattered nine hits, walked one and struck out four. Morrow had four hits and three RBI in the opener, while Hill had three hits and five RBI. Casey Long (Johnstown, PA) put the Mountain Cats on top 2-0 with a home run in the first inning of the second game, but that would be all the visitors would get. Jack Talley (Royersford, PA) allowed only one baserunner after the two-run homer with one out in the first. He surrendered just three hits, with no walks and four strikeouts in six innings. Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) led the offense in the nightcap with three hits and two RBI. Blair Reynolds (King, NC) and Morrow also had a pair of hits. Morrow has closed within four hits of the Catawba mark for a hits in a career. He has 207 hits, three behind Greg Payne, who had 210 in his four years. #######
