Men's Basketball Falls to Virginia State
SALISBURY, NC -- Virginia State knocked off host Catawba 92-83 in men's basketball action at the Salisbury Roundball Classic on Saturday night at Goodman Gym. The Trojans improve to 1-1, while the Catawba Indians fall to 0-2.
Virginia State rallied from a 12-point deficit in the second half to take the win. A three-pointer by Isaac Rose (Jonesville, NC/W. Forsyth HS) put Catawba on top 62-50 with 12:55 remaining and the Indians led 73-66 after a Rose follow shot with 5:48 to go. From there, the Trojans would run off 11 straight points in a little over a minute to take a 77-73 lead with 4:24 left.
Clifton Springfield-Cobb (Charlotte, NC) and Jamar Fleming (Richmond, VA) each had three-pointers and Christopher Washington (Richmond, VA) capped the run with a three-point play. A three–point play by Michael Johnson (Philadelphia, PA) put Virginia State ahead 80-75 with 2:53 remaining and the Trojans canned all eight free throw tries in the final 1:40 to grab the win.
Trey Mines (St. George, VA) led Virginia State with 19 points, while Fleming added 14. Corey Snell (Roanoke, VA) had 10 points and rebounds. Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) led Catawba with 17 points, while Rose added 16 points off the bench. Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) tossed in 15 points.
