Howard Leads Women's Basketball to Win at Comfort Suites Classic
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba, behind 23 points from senior NeKeithia Howard (Macon, GA/Northeast HS), picked up its first win of the season with a 73-60 victory over visiting Molloy at the Comfort Suites Classic on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 1-1, while the Lady Lions fall to 0-3.
Catawba trailed only once, coming at 4-3 in the opening minutes. From there, the Lady Indians used a 12-2 run to grab a 15-6 lead at the 11:16 mark of the opening half. Catawba would stretch its lead to 16 at the half.
The Lady Indians would hold a double-digit lead the entire second half with Howard giving Catawba its largest lead at 56-31 on a three-point play with 11:31 to play. The senior connected on six-of-eight from the field and was 11-of-12 at the line for her game-high 23 points.
The contest saw the teams combine for 49 fouls and 55 free throws. Catawba had more made free throws (26) than field goals (22), but shot a consistent 81.3% from the stripe on 26-for-32 shooting. Molloy made just 10-of-23 (34.4%) at the line.
Sicilia LoSauro (Oviedo, FL/Oviedo HS) also reached double figures for Catawba with 14 points, making all six of her free throw tries, while Cristi Bartlett (Camden, NC/Camden HS) pulled down 11 rebounds. Molloy was led in scoring by Tatiana Lopez, who put up 19 for the Lady Lions. Guard Kymire Woodberry pulled down 13 rebounds and was one point shy of a double-double with nine points.
