Women's Basketball Overcomes Cold Shooting to Defeat Livingstone

Ladies make just three of 25 shots in second half

SALISBURY, NC -- Despite making just three field goals in the second half, Catawba defeated host Livingstone 57-49 in women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Trent Gym.  The Catawba Indians improve to 4-1, while the Lady Blue Bears fall to 1-6.

Neither team enjoyed proficient shooting nights as Catawba made just 15 of 60 (25%) shots, while Livingstone was marginally better at 31.5% (17-of-54).  Livingstone scored the game’s first six points and led 12-2 after five minutes.  The Lady Blue Bears would enjoy their largest lead at 15-6 after a three-point play by Turquoise Lane.

Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) started a 15-0 Catawba run with a three-pointer and her layup cut the deficit to 15-14.  NeKeithia Howard (Macon, GA/Northeast HS) put Catawba on top to stay with 7:31 to go in the opening half.  The Lady Indians went on to build its lead to a dozen before the break and held a 35-25 edge at intermission.

Howard scored the first basket of the second half, while Dione Eccles (Clemmons, NC/W. Forsyth HS) had a three-pointer then a layup after a steal with 13:16 left to give Catawba a 42-31 lead.  That would be the last field for the Lady Indians for the rest of the game.
