Men's Basketball Rally Comes Up Short at LR
HICKORY, NC -- Catawba fought back from a 10-point deficit in the final 10 minutes, but a pair of late turnovers helped Lenoir-Rhyne hold on for a 70-66 win in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Shuford Gym. The win improved the Bears to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 2-3 and 0-1.
Catawba led for most of the first half, but a 12-0 run by Lenoir-Rhyne in the final six minutes of the half put the Bears up 34-31. LR would take a 36-33 edge to the break. The teams stayed close much of the second half before the Bears surged to a 56-46 lead with 9:32 remaining.
Down 60-50 Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) scored six of eight points as the Tribe pulled within 60-58 with 5:27 to go. A three-pointer by Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) with 2:40 remaining knotted the game at 64-64.
The teams would trade turnovers before Josh Kindred gave the Bears a 66-64 lead with 1:22 left. Another turnover by the Tribe led to basket by Reggie Bratton for a four-point LR lead with just 19 seconds remaining. Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) trimmed the lead to 68-66 with 13 seconds left, but Marcus Hodges made two free throws with 10 seconds to go for the final margin.
Kindred posted a double-double for Lenoir-Rhyne with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Donte Watson followed with 15 points and Bratton scored a dozen off the bench. Houston scored 15 for Catawba, while Norman Monroe (Newport News, VA/Heritage HS) had 13 points and eight rebounds.
