BLUEFIELD, WV -- Senior Sicilia LoSauro (Oviedo, FL/Oviedo HS) scored a career-high 26 points, canning six three-pointers, as the Catawba women’s basketball team defeated host Bluefield State 67-54 in the consolation game of the Herb Sims Tournament on Saturday night at Shott Gym.   The Catawba Indians improve to 5-3, while the Rams fall to 2-4.

The teams battled tightly for the first 10 minutes, but Catawba used a 15-0 run midway through the opening half to break things open.  After two free throws by NeKeithia Howard (Macon, GA/Northeast HS), LoSauro connected on her first three-pointer for a 23-18 edge with 8:56 left in the half.

Howard completed a three-point play and LoSauro canned another three for a 29-18 edge at the 8:13 mark.  Her fourth three-pointer of the half stretched the margin to 41-24 with 3:13 before the break.  Catawba would hold a 43-28 lead at the half.

Bluefield State quickly cut the lead to seven early in the final half, but a long range shot by LoSauro keyed a 12-2 run the pushed the advantage to 55-38 with 11:31 to play.  Catawba would then go nearly seven minutes without scoring and saw its lead diminish to a single point with 5:58 remaining after consecutive baskets by Laila Shareef.

Candace Schellenberg (Yadkinville, NC/Forbush HS) ended the drought with a free throw with 4:48 remaining and Catawba kept Bluefield State off the board the rest of the way.  LoSauro added a jumper, two free throws and her final three-pointer for a 63-54 edge with 3:31 left.

Howard also reached double figures for Catawba with 17 points.  Schellenberg had five points and eight rebounds.  Shareef tallied 22 points to lead the Rams.  After shooting 45.5% in the opening half Catawba fell off to 28% in the final half, but did hold a 50-32 edge on the glass.
