Men's Basketball Drops 75-56 Decision to JC Smith
CHARLOTTE, NC -- Catawba shot just 35% and fell to host Johnson C. Smith 75-56 in men’s basketball action on Monday night at Brayboy Gym. The win lifts the Golden Bulls to 6-3, while the Catawba Indians fall to 4-4.
Jerry Hollis scored on a jumper 45 seconds into the game for a 2-0 lead and JC Smith stayed in front the rest of the way. Catawba hit on just 30% in the first half and were held to 21 points. Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) pulled the Tribe within a point at 18-17 midway through the half, but the Bulls scored 13 straight points to take command.
JC Smith led 34-21 at the half and unlike the first meeting where Catawba rallied from the same deficit to grab a win the Bulls stayed in front by double-digits. A three-point play by Jason Diggs (Christiansburg, VA/Christiansburg HS) with 13:06 remaining got Catawba as close as it would get in the final half at 45-34. JSCU followed with a 12-1 run to regain command.
Ryan Scott, with 15 points, led four Bulls in double figures. Hollis added 14, while Edmund Rainey came off the bench to post a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg) led Catawba with nine points, ending a stretch of 24 straight double-figure scoring games for the sophomore. Catawba failed to have a player reach double figures for the first time since 1997 in a loss to Presbyterian.
