Men's Basketball Returns From Break to Take Thrilling 92-91 OT Win vs. Queens
HICKORY, NC -- Sophomore Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) made a free throw with one second remaining to lift the Catawba Indians to a 92-91 overtime win over Queens at the Moretz Sports Classic at Lenoir-Rhyne’s Shuford Gym. The win improves Catawba to 5-4, while the Royals fall to 5-3.
The point by Houston marked the first tally be either team in the final two minutes after Queens had rallied from a five point deficit in the extra time. Isaac Rose (Jonesville, NC/W. Forsyth HS) connected on a three-pointer with 3:16 left to put Catawba up 91-86, but Queens rallied to tie the score at 91-91 with 2:06 remaining on a basket by Darnell Evans. Each team missed chances down the stretch and Houston was able to rebound a miss by Dominick Reid (Concord, NC/Cannon School) in the waning seconds and sank a free throw after being fouled.
Queens led for most of the first half, taking a 31-19 lead after four straight hoops from Evans. The Royals would stretch the lead to as many as 17 before settling for a 37-25 lead at the break.
John Thompson would give Queens a 51-37 lead two minutes into the second half, but Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) hit a layup and three-pointer to spark a 16-0 run the gave the Indians a 53-51 lead on a basket by Reid with 14:17 to go. Catawba would continue its surge and built a 67-56 with ten minutes left.
Queens trailed 69-60 before a nine-point run tied the score with five minutes to play. The Royals twice led by five down the stretch, but Fields canned a jumper and a three-pointer to tie the game at 75-all with 2:09 remaining. Down 80-75, Reid converted a three-point play with 1:05 left and sent the game to overtime with his three-pointer at the buzzer of regulation.
Reid quickly gave the Indians the lead in overtime with a three-point play four seconds into the extra time. Houston followed with a pair of free throws for an 88-83 edge less than 30 seconds into the overtime.
Cliff Burns (Cooleemee, NC/Davie Co. HS) paced Catawba with a career-high 20 points and seven rebounds. Fields (18 points) and Reid (15 points) also posted career-best scoring efforts. Evans led all scorers for Queens, posting a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds. Stephen Bailey followed with 22 points.
