Baseball beats Limestone as Morrow nears hit record

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College got four hits from Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) and defeated visiting Limestone 9-5 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Indians used a big third inning, scoring five times, to improve to 12-5. Limestone falls to 8-12.In the Catawba third, Blair Reynolds (King, NC) broke a scoreless tie with a two-run single, while Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) doubled home two more. Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) capped the inning with a RBI single. Reynolds homered in the fourth to up the lead to 6-0. Limestone got on the board in the sixth on a three-run home run by Pat Evans (Simpsonville, SC). Catawba answered right back with three of its own in the frame. Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) plated a run on a grounder, while Motsinger doubled home a run and Southard singled home the third. Brian Hatley (Salisbury, NC) went five innings to improve his record to 2-1. He allowed no runs on three hits, while walking two and striking out three. In addition to the four singles by Southard, Reynolds, Motsinger and Israel Morrow (Claremont, NC) each had two hits. The two hits by Morrow brings him within one of Greg Payne’s career record of 210 hits. #######
