Reid's Three-Pointer Lifts Men's Basketball to Win Over Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Freshman Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) connected on a three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining to lift Catawba to a 74-73 upset of Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 9-4 and 2-1. The win is also the 15th in the last 16 games for Catawba at home against Wingate.
Wingate had grabbed its first lead since the 12:05 mark of the opening half on a second-chance basket by Sean Barnette (Rock Hill, SC) with 27 seconds left to set up Reid’s game-winner. The Bulldogs had one final chance, but Barnette missed in the closing seconds and Donald Rutherford (Morganton, NC/Freedom HS) grabbed the last of his 10 rebounds to end the contest.
Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) led Catawba with 23 points, including 15 in the final half. Norman Monroe (Newport News, VA/Heritage HS) posted 14 points. Bryan Grier (Charlotte, NC) was the big man for Wingate with 22 points, 19 rebounds and five blocked shots. Barnette added 13 points and nine boards, but was just five-of-19 from the field.
The Bulldogs led for most of the opening minutes until a layup by Jason Diggs (Christiansburg, VA/Christiansburg HS) put the Tribe up 16-15 at the 12:05 mark of the opening stanza. Catawba would push its lead to 37-28 on back-to-back three-pointers from Reid and Isaac Rose (Jonesville, NC/W. Forsyth HS) and took a 42-37 lead to the break after Reid’s triple with five seconds to go before the half.
The Indians moved ahead 52-41 on a three-pointer by Houston with 18:30 remaining, but Wingate rallied and pulled within a point at 54-53 on a dunk by Grier with 11:45 left. Catawba would go back up by eight following a three-pointer by Houston, but again Grier brought the Bulldogs within a single point on a dunk at the 7:08 mark.
Wingate would final claw back to tie the score on two free throws by Brandon Plummer (Norfolk, VA) with 3:38 remaining. A Houston layup and two free throws by Grier left the game tied at 71-all with 1:45 to go. Barnette would convert his own miss following a Catawba turnover for the 73-71 lead with 27 ticks on the clock to set up Reid’s game-winner from the top of the key.
