Men's Basketball Posts 81-71 Win Over Brevard
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba took control early in the second half and went on to record an 81-71 victory over visiting Brevard in men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 9-6, while the Tornados fall to 2-12.
The Indians placed three players in double figures led by Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) with 17. Isaac Rose (Jonesville, NC/W. Forsyth HS) came off the bench to add 13 points and six rebounds and Finnur Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELAND/Wesleyan Academy,FL) provided a career-high 10 points.
The game went back-and-forth in the opening half with the Tornados holding a 28-26 lead with 3:47 left, but Rose and Houston hit layups in the final 30 seconds to send Catawba to the locker room with a 35-31 edge. Jonathan Whitson (Clyde, NC) pulled Brevard within 45-42 with 15:24 remaining, but the Indians went on a 9-0 run to grab a double-digit lead.
A three-pointer by Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) pushed the Catawba advantage to 63-49 and the Indians stayed up by nine or more the rest of the way. Whitson led all scorers with 28 points for Brevard. Shane Galloway (Rosman, NC) had a dozen points off the bench, while Cody Siniard (Brevard, NC) had 10 points and six assists.
Catawba held a 44-29 edge on the boards and had 21 second-chance points to just 10 for the Tornados. Both team shot just over 47% for the game and the Indians had an advantage at the line making 20-of-37 to 14-of-21 for Brevard.
