Women's Basketball Still Looking For League Win After Loss at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Allison Shafer scored 21 points to lead host Mars Hill to an 85-71 victory over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Arena. The win improves the Lady Lions to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 7-9 and 0-4.
Mars Hill trailed 35-34 late in the opening half then scored the final eight points before the break and never trailed again. Catawba had held an early 14-8 edge, but an 11-0 run by the Lady Lions gave the hosts its first lead since scoring the first basket. The teams traded the lead until the late surge by Mars Hill.
A three-point play by Ariel Okunowo with 16:13 remaining gave Mars Hill a 51-39 lead and Catawba never closed within single digits from that point. Okunowo followed Shafer with 17 points, while Jessica Blanford added 15 points and seven rebounds.
NeKeithia Howard (Macon, GA/Northeast HS) led Catawba with 19 points and six rebounds with Brooke Whitley (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) adding a career-high 13 points, reaching double figures for the first time. Turnovers provided a big lift for the Lady Lions as they scored 28 points off 23 Catawba turnovers. The Lady Indians helped force 19 miscues from Mars Hill, but it led to just seven points.
Catawba shot a touch better than Mars Hill, hitting 44% to 39% for the Lady Lions. Mars Hill held an edge at the line where it canned 30-of-35 (86%), while Catawba made 16-of-21 (76.2%).
