Houston Nets Career-Best 34 Points to Lead Men's Basketball Over Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba claimed an 82-77 win over host Mars Hill behind a career-high 34 points from Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Arena. The Catawba Indians improve to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 5-9 and 1-3.
Houston scored 18 points in the opening half, but Catawba trailed 39-38 at the break. The sophomore would score the opening two basketball of the second half to put the Tribe on top. Mars Hill would grab a 44-42 lead at the 17:40 mark which would be its last as Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) tied the contest and Houston gave the Tribe the lead on a three-pointer. After Akeene Coakley tied the game, Houston converted two free throws for a 29-27 lead with 14:32 remaining to put the Tribe up for good.
The Indians would build a 13-point lead at 66-53 with 9:36 to play for its largest lead. Mars Hill rallied to within six with just over three minutes to play, but Catawba hit six straight free throws to keep an 81-73 lead with 35 seconds remaining. Houston made 11-of-16 from the field, including six-of-nine from long range.
Catawba hit on half of its shots in the second half and finished at 45.2% to just 38.9% for the Lions. Donald Rutherford (Morganton, NC/Freedom HS) was the only other Catawba player in double figures with 13, which was also a career-high. Jamarl Glen led the Lions with 22 points, while Stoney Polite added 15 points and five assists.
