Women's Basketball Shoot Just 26.7% in 63-49 Loss to Newberry
SALISBURY, NC -- Newberry got 20 points and 11 rebounds from Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, SC) and defeated host Catawba 63-49 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Newberry improves to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 8-10 and 1-5.
Newberry had eight turnovers on its first 10 possessions, but trailed just 6-2after six minutes of action. Newberry used a 10-3 run to go up 16-11 and held Catawba scoreless the final 6:46 of the half to lead 27-16 at the break. Each team finished with 13 turnovers, but Newberry shot 52% to just 30% for Catawba.
Catawba would go scoreless for nearly three minutes to open the second half before a free throw by Brittany Higgins (Tacoma Park, MD/Blair HS) ended the nearly 10 minutes of futility at the 17:06 mark. Her jumper with 15:30 left pulled Catawba within 31-21, but that would be as close as the Lady Indians would get until Higgins converted a jumper with 8:12 left to cut the margin to 45-36.
Newberry was able to overcome 25 turnovers by hitting on 51% from the field, canning 24-of-47 shots, and also holding a 44-29 edge on the boards. Catawba made only 24% in the second half and finished at 26.7% (16-of-69) for the game.
Ashlee Wright (Myrtle Beach, SC) also reached double figures for Newberry with 12 points. Higgins led Catawba with 11 points, while Cameron Clark (Albemarle, NC/N. Stanly HS) added 10.
