Hot-Shooting Newberry Too Much For Men's Basketball
SALISBURY, NC -- Newberry’s Clemente Martin (Freeport, BAHAMAS) scored 29 points to lead the Indians past host Catawba 92-82 in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The win improves Newberry to 8-9 overall and 3-4 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 11-7 and 3-3.
Newberry jumped out to a 31-19 lead after a little over nine minutes as the Indians hit on 11 of their first 15 shots, including all five three-point attempts. Catawba would stay close and shot 52% in the opening half and held a 48-46 edge at the break. Newberry finished the half at 50% on 16-of-32 shooting.
Catawba’s shooting would fall off in the second half, where it also made 10 of its 18 turnovers. Newberry took the lead on a layup by Martin at 53-51 with 16:31 remaining and led the rest of the way. The visitors capped an 11-0 run with a three-pointer by Grant Domsic (Winter Park, FL) for a 75-61 lead. Catawba got as close as nine on a three-point play by Isaac Rose (Jonesville, NC/W. Forsyth HS) 3:21 left, but Newberry scored six straight points to ice the issue.
Martin hit on 11-of-14 shots and also had four steals and five rebounds. Stephane Bakinde (Yoaunde, CAMEROON) delivered 15 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Matt Alexander (Atlanta, GA) also had 15 points with Vytautas Valiulis (Vilnius, LITHUANIA) adding 12 points and eight rebounds.
Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) led Catawba with 18 points with Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) adding 13 points, hitting on 4-of-5 three-pointers. Rose had 11 points, while Norman Monroe (Newport News, VA/Heritage HS) and Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) each scoring 10 points.
