Baseball Rallies For Win at Pfeiffer
MISENHEIMER, NC -- Catawba rallied in the eighth inning to take a 7-3 win over host Pfeiffer in baseball action at Ferebee Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the win the Catawba Indians improve to 3-1, while the Falcons fall to 3-1.
Catawba jumped on top in the second inning on run-scoring singles by Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) and Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) with two outs. Tribe starter Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) kept Pfeiffer at bay until two outs in the fourth. Zach Pou (Stanley, NC) homered to get Pfeiffer on the board and the Falcons followed with three consecutive singles, taking a 3-2 lead on a hit by Ryan Brown (Concord, NC).
The Indians left runners in scoring position in the fifth and seventh innings, but plated four in the eighth to go back on top. Andrew O’Neal (King, NC/W. Stokes HS) led off with a double and after a walk, Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC/N. Rowan HS) drove home the tying run on a single down the first base line.
A David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS) sacrifice fly gave Catawba a 4-3 edge and Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single for a 6-3 edge. Pfeiffer put two on in its eighth, but Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) got out of the jam, getting Pou on a ground out. Matt Seabolt (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro HS) closed out the game on a double-play ball by Brown.
Lyerly led Catawba at the plate with three hits, while Baker and Morris each drove in two runs and had two hits. Thomas and Sands joined the multi-hit group with a pair of hits. Brown and Bryan Braxton (Hillsborough, NC) collected two hits for Pfeiffer. Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake HS) picked up the win in relief as he tossed two perfect innings. The Catawba pen has not given up a run in 13 innings to open the season, surrendering just six hits.
