Women's Basketball Falls to League-Leading Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- Visiting Catawba fell to Wingate 90-68 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 16-5 overall and 8-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 9-11 and 2-6.
The Lady Indians were hurt by 28 turnovers and shot just 35%. Wingate got 21 points from Kasey Gillis and 20 off the bench from Kate Edwards and never trailed. Brittany Higgins (Tacoma Park, MD/Blair HS) led Catawba with 19 points, while NeKeithia Howard (Macon, GA/Northeast HS) had 17 points and nine rebounds.
Wingate began to pull away midway through the first half as a 22-9 run gave the Bulldogs a 40-21 edge with 3:09 left in the half. The Lady Indians cut the deficit to 12 by the break and pulled within 47-38 on a Higgins three-pointer early in the second half, but that would be as close as Catawba would get as Wingate would lead by double-digits the rest of the way.
