Men's Basketball Drops Decision at Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- Wingate shot 60.3 percent from the field and cruised to a 106-75 victory over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improves to 16-5 overall and 7-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 11-9 and 3-5, suffering their third straight loss.
Five players hit double-digits for the Bulldogs, who raced to a 26-8 lead and never looked back. Sean Barnette (Rock Hill, SC) led the way with 19 points, while Sam Holmes (Danville, VA) added 17 points and Brandon Plummer (Norfolk, VA) chipped in with 12 points.
Freshman Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) led the Catawba attack with 15 points to go along with six rebounds. Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) followed with 11 points with Norman Monroe (Newport News, VA) contributing 10 points.
After the hot Wingate start that saw the Bulldogs stretch its edge to 39-19 lead on a jumper from David Johnson (Raleigh, NC) at the 6:02 mark, the Indians put together an 8-0 run to cut the lead to a dozen at 39-27. Reid and Isaac Rose (Jonesville, NC/W. Forsyth HS) each had three points in the spurt.
That would be the highlight for Catawba as Wingate would end the half on a 17-9 run to lead 56-36 at the break. The Bulldogs canned 63% in the opening half, while Catawba hit on just 33%. Wingate didn’t slow down in the second half, extending the lead to 30 at the 13:29 mark. A lay-up from Grier capped the opening run, making it 73-43 Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs were 44-for-73 (60.3 percent) from the field on the night. They hit seven-of-13 from beyond the arc (53.8 percent). Catawba shot 35.4 percent (28-for-79) from the field and 33.3 percent (six-for-18) from three-point range. Wingate held a 48-43 rebounding edge, while outscoring the Indians 58-34 in the paint. The hosts also held a 22-4 advantage in fast break points.
