Baseball Tops Newberry 16-8 Behind Lyerly's Four-Hits
KANNAPOLIS, NC -- Catawba scored 10 runs over the first three innings and went on defeat Newberry 16-8 in baseball action at the 2008 SAC pre-season tournament at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Thursday night. The Catawba Indians move to 4-1 with their third straight win, while Newberry falls to 1-4.
David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS) put Catawba on the board with the first pitch in the bottom of the first with a solo homer. Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) and Andrew O’Neal (King, NC/W. Stokes HS) had RBI doubles in the frame as Catawba went up 4-0. Query and Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) singled home runs in the second for a 6-0 advantage.
In the third, Catawba rallied with two outs, getting a run-scoring single from Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) and a three-run homer from Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS). Lyerly would produce a career-best four hits on the night, driving in three runs and scoring four. Bubba Morris (Spencer, NC/N. Rowan HS) also scored four times.
Newberry got on the board in the fifth with a pair of unearned runs on a double by Tyler Hartman (Deland, FL) and a single by Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, PUERTO RICO). Query and Baker would answer for Catawba with run-scoring hits of their own in the fifth. Query finished with three hits and three RBI, while Baker also drove in three.
With two outs in the eight, Newberry rallied to within 14-8. Rohena and Brandon Mand (Laurinburg, NC) each delivered two-run doubles in the frame. Rohena drove in three for the game on two hits. Mand and Hartman each drove in two runs.
Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) pitched out of the eighth for Catawba and tossed a perfect ninth. Tim Holmes (Bay Village, OH/Bay HS) earned a win in his first start. He tossed five and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and three runs (one earned) with four strikeouts.
