Softball Opens Season With Doubleheader Sweep at Belmont Abbey
BELMONT, NC -- The Catawba softball team opened its season with a doubleheader sweep of host Belmont Abbey on Thursday afternoon at Crusader Field. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 9-1 and 8-2 in the openers for both teams.
Jacqueline White’s (Mt. Ulla, NC/W. Rowan HS) two-out, two-run single broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning of the opener to propel the Lady Indians. Catawba had scored an unearned run in the second to take the lead, but Belmont Abbey answered in the third on a two-out double by Dani Beres (Greenville, NC).
One-out singles in the fifth by Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschooled), Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC/NW Guilford HS) and Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) set the table for White. Catawba would tack on five runs in the sixth for insurance behind freshman Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Lloyd Bird HS), who earned the win in her debut. She scattered five hits with five strikeouts.
The teams would trade a pair of runs in inning three of the second game. Whitesides scored on an error for Catawba and Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) singled home the second run. The Crusaders tied the score on a two-run homer by Abby Threat (Charlotte, NC).
Catawba broke the game open in the fourth with a five spot. Geouge’s bases-clearing double was the big blow for a 5-2 lead. Whitesides and Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) each had run-scoring singles in the frame. Marshall capped the scoring with a solo home run in the sixth.
Tiffany Farley (Greensboro, NC/NW Guilford HS) picked up the win as she allowed the two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Geouge, Marshall and Whitesides collected two hits in each game. Geouge racked up four RBI.
