Smith Tosses Five-Hitter as Baseball Blanks St. Rose 8-0
KANNAPOLIS, NC -- Senior Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC/S. Stokes HS) tossed a five-hit shutout to lead Catawba to an 8-0 win over the College of St. Rose in baseball action at the 2008 SAC pre-season tournament at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Friday afternoone. The Catawba Indians move to 5-1, while the Golden Knights fall to 0-2.
Smith cruised through most of the game, getting out of a first and third situation in the third with an inning-ending double play then working out of a second-and-third no-out jam in the eighth with a groundout and two strikeouts. He finished with nine strikeouts and walked just one.
Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) put the Indians on the board in the first with a two-out double and also plated the first run in the third as Catawba went up 3-0 after three innings. He knocked home David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS), who led off with a double and tripled in the third, both times.
Thomas would double and score on a single by Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) in the sixth and Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) capped the scoring in the eighth with a three-run blast. Thomas enjoyed a three-hit afternoon, while Sands reached safely twice.
