Baseball Gets Extra-Inning Win Over Wingate
KANNAPOLIS, NC -- Catawba’s Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) scored on a balk in the 11th inning to help the Indians to a 4-3 win over Wingate in baseball action on Sunday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 6-2, while the Bulldogs fall to 3-5.
Lyerly opened the 11th with a single and moved to third on two wild pitches before coming home on the balk. The sophomore, who is hitting. 529 in the early going, was the catalyst in the Tribe’s ninth-inning rally as he led off the inning with a triple and scored on a single by Andrew O’Neal (King, NC/W. Stokes HS)
Wingate had rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the seventh, scoring three times on just one hit. After a pair of walks and a hit batter, Nick Siega-Riz (Clemmons, NC) plated the first run on a ground out. Blair Troutman (Concord, NC) followed with a two-run single to give the Bulldogs their lead.
Two Catawba relievers worked four perfect innings to keep Wingate at bay after surrendering the lead. Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) threw two innings and struck out four, including the side in the ninth. Matt Seabolt (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro HS) tossed the final two innings to claim the win.
Catawba scored a run in the first inning as Lyerly and O’Neal opened with infield singles. Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) delivered a two-out single to plate Lyerly. The Indians added a second run in the fourth as Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Furr
Lyerly and O’Neal each had three hits for Catawba, while Query and Baker added two each as the Indians doubled up the Bulldogs in hits 12-6. Troutman had two of the Wingate hits. Catawba’s Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) tossed seven innings and allowed just six hits with four strikeouts. Dusty White (Charlotte, NC) threw six inning for Wingate and allowed just two runs (one earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts.
