Huff, Drakes Highlight Day 3 of BGMC Swimming Championships
CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Catawba women stand in fifth place, while the men are sixth heading into the final day at the Blue Grass Mountain Conference Championships being held at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. The meet will conclude on Saturday.
Freshman Katie Huff (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) swam to a third-place finish in the 100 breast and set a new school record of 1:08.38. Meredith Shultz (Richmond, VA/James River HS) was fifth in the event and had a lifetime best of 1:10.03.
Leigh Spada (Shelby, NC/Shelby HS) took a sixth in the 200 free, while Brittany Harrigan (Ruscom, Ontarion, CANADA/Essex District) had a lifetime best in the 100 back and finished 12th. Another lifetime best swim for the women was turned in by Dana Jaremko (Willow Springs, NC/Wake Christian Academy) in her leadoff leg of the 800 free relay.
On the men’s side, Patrik Drakes (Stockholm, SWEDEN/Rudbechs Gymnasium) swam to a third-place finish in the 100 breast. He had a NCAA “B” cut and school-record time of 57.97. Freshman Alex Walpole (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) won the “B” final of the 200 free, setting a school record with a swim of 1:44.50.
The 200 medley relay team of Drakes, Patrick Novak, Grant Gibson (Owen Sound, Ontario, CANADA/West Hill HS) and Walpole set a school record of 1:39.88 and were seventh. The women finished fifth in both the 200 medley and 800 free relays.
