Baseball Finishes Off Sweep of Newberry
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba finished off a weekend sweep of visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference baseball action, taking a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The 29th-ranked Indians won by the scores of 5-2 and 10-1 and improve to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 3-8 and 0-3.
Catawba led 5-0 entering the ninth of the opener behind the strong pitching of Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC/W. Caldwell HS), who tossed seven shutout inning. The junior allowed just three hits and struck out seven with a pair of walks. Newberry would come alive in its final at bat. After two runs had scored, Newberry had the bases loaded with one out, but Matt Seabolt (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro HS) got the final two out to preserve the win.
In the second game, Catawba would use a seven-run fifth to break open a close game, going on top 10-0. David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS) homered to give Catawba the lead in the third inning and Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) led off the fourth frame to push the lead to 2-0. In the big fifth, Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) and Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) doubled home runs, while Matt Kepley (Greensboro, NC/Ragsdale HS) had a RBI-triple.
Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) pitched into the sixth and allowed just an unearned run off five hits with five strikeouts. Thomas had three hits in the opener and two in the nightcap and has now homered in three straight games. Kepley had three hits in the second game, while Query had a pair of hits in each game of the double dip.
