Baseball falls in league opener

JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Catawba College dropped its South Atlantic Conference baseball opener 9-6 to host and 20th-ranked Carson-Newman at the Silver Diamond Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Eaglesí Matt Huskey pitched six innings, allowing just two earned runs to improve his record to 7-0. Carson-Newman improves to 16-6 and 1-0 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 13-6 and 0-1.Catawba grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second inning as Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) singled home a run and after a run scored on an error, Israel Morrow (Claremont, NC) singled home another run. Carson-Newman came right back in its second, getting a run-scoring double from Wes Ward and a three-run home run by Jason Linebarger. The Eagles would take command in the fourth, getting three two out hits to plate three runs to go on top 8-3. Catawba got a sacrifice fly from Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) in the sixth and a RBI double from Blair Reynolds (King, NC) in the seventh to close the gap. In the ninth, Reynolds singled home a run to get the tying run to the plate, but Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) was retired on a grounder to first to end the game. Morrow, Reynolds and Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) each had two hits for the Tribe, while Reynolds drove home two runs. Heath Mason was 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI to lead the Eagles, while Linebarger had two hits and the three RBI on his third home run of the season. Ryan West came in to face Southard in the ninth and recorded his ninth save. Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) allowed eight runs in three and two-thirds innings for Catawba. David Stroup (Pfafftown, NC) and Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) gave the Tribe a chance to rally by holding Carson-Newman to a single run in four and one-third innings of relief. #######
