Football Adds Four to 2008 Recruiting Class

06_football_0134

The Catawba football staff has announced additions to the recruiting class for 2008.  The Indians have picked up commitments from Dustin Craft (China Grove, NC/Carson HS), Andrew Duncan (Thomasville, NC/Ledford HS), Alan McManus (Garner, NC/Garner HS) and Holt Raines (Goldsboro, NC/Rosewood HS).

Octavius Hough (6-1, 185) produced more than 40 tackles and three interceptions at East Mecklenburg HS for the 9-4 Eagles.  "Octavius is a young man that has all the tools to become a very exciting athlete for Catawba," Coach Chip Hester noted.  "One of his positives is his frame.  He has the potential to be that big-bodied safety that we have not had in a while."

Hester also picked up a top Michigan safety from Grand Rapids Community College in Jared Hensley shortly after national signing day.  "Jared is a versatile athlete that could help our team in several ways," said Hester.  "He is a big hitting defensive back as well as a special team's leader."

Hensley played safety and long snapper for Grand Rapids CC, who were the 2006 Graphic Edge Bowl champions.  In 2007, Hensley played in six games, in which he made 32 tackles, a tackle for loss, and forced a fumble.  As a senior at Hudsonville HS, he earned All-OK Red-Metro Conference honors and All-Advance Region accolades as a linebacker in 2004.  Hudsonville won the 2004 OK Red-Metro Conference and a district title with a perfect 6-0 mark, while finishing 10-2 overall on the season.

Casey Hall, a running back transfer from Averett University, has already enrolled at Catawba and is ready to take part in spring practice.  "Casey transferred to Catawba in January," Hester said. "He is a really athletic young man that is working extremely hard right now."

Hall appeared in four games for the Cougars, recording nine carries for 27 yards.  As a return man at Averett, he fielded three kickoffs for 38 yards, averaging 12.7 yards per return.  At Northwest Cabarrus, Hall was apart of an 8-7 Trojan squad that advanced to the 3AA quarterfinals against Charlotte Catholic in 2006.  Hall rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown in a 19-14 win over Mooresville, making the transition from safety to running back during the season.

Decarius Kanyinda impressed the coaching staff on a visit to the college a couple weeks before signing day.  "Decarius has the size, speed, and potential to be an impact guy on the offensive line for us," commented Hester.  "We feel like he has the athleticism of a defensive lineman and the size of an offensive lineman."

Craft, who started at linebacker both years for a brand-new Carson High School in China Grove, NC, made a splash for Coach Mark Woody's diaper-wearing Cougars.  As a junior, Craft made 145 tackles and All-North Piedmont Conference honors in Carson's first year of existence.  The Cougars endured a less than stellar 0-22 record during that initial two-year span.
