Baseball Falls at Belmont Abbey
BELMONT, NC -- Belmont Abbey used a nine-run second inning to knock off 18th-ranked Catawba 15-10 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Abbey Yard. The host Crusaders improve to 8-6, while the Catawba Indians fall to 9-3.
Catawba jumped on top early as Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) had an RBI in each of the first two innings to help the Tribe to a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Indian starter Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly) got into trouble and before the inning was over Belmont Abbey, who scored 20 runs against Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday, led 9-4.
Seth Waller led off the inning with a home run which was followed by three straight singles. After a walk, Elio Rey doubled home two runs to tie the score. A single by Tyler McKenzie gave the Crusaders the lead and Carlos Vasquez capped the frame with a two-out, three-run homer.
Catawba scored twice in the third and got a two-run homer by Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) to close the gap to 10-8 and pulled within 11-10 after a two-run shot by Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) in the sixth. Belmont Abbey would get two-run homers by Waller and Alex Castellanos in the seventh, making the second round-tripper of the game for each, to grab a 15-10 lead.
Andrew Morton would keep Catawba’s bats silent over the late frames as he tossed three perfect innings of relief for his third save. Castellanos collected four-hits for the Crusaders, while Vasquez added three. Each, along with Waller, drove in three runs. Baker enjoyed a four-hit day for Catawba.
