Six Swimmers Earn All-Blue Grass Mountain Honors
Teams broke 18 school marks during the BGMC Championships
SALISBURY, NC -- Six members of the Catawba swim teams earned All-Blue Grass Mountain Conference honors with their efforts last weekend. Earning league honors on the women’s side was senior Leigh Spada (Shelby, NC/Shelby HS) and freshmen Katie Huff (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) and Mereidith Shultz (Richmond, VA/James River HS). Sophomores Patrik Drakes (Stockholm, SWEDEN/Rudbechs Gymnasium) and Grant Gibson (Owen Sound, Ontario, CANADA) along with freshman Alex Walpole (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) were honored on the men’s side.
During the BGMC Championships, Catawba broke 18 school records and had 41 lifetime best swims. Spada swam NCAA “B” cuts in the 50 and 100 free, while Drakes had a “B” cut swim in the 100 breast. Drakes had three individual record swims coming in the 50 breast, 50 back and 100 breast. Spada broke records in the 50 and 100 free.
Walpole also set multiple records which were in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle events. Shultz had a school mark in the 200 breast and a freshman record in the 500 free. Huff had a record in the 100 breast and Pat Novak set a mark in the 50 free. The men set four relay records.
