Women's Basketball Rally Falls Short vs. Lenoir-Rhyne
SALISBURY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne picked up a 75-67 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Bears improve to 14-11 overall and 4-8 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 10-15 and 3-10.
The Bears never trailed, getting 17 points from Jami Safrit (Hickory, NC) and 16 from Jacqueline Kremer (Sevierville, TN). Lenoir-Rhyne began to pull away late in the first half and led 39-28 at the break. Kremer had 10 of her points in the opening half. Catawba had 11 of its 18 turnovers in the first half and missed on seven of its first eight free throw attempts. L-R made 13-of-15 at the stripe in the first half.
Catawba twice cut the deficit to six points early in the second half, but Lenoir-Rhyne pushed the margin to 15 with 10:19 remaining. The Lady Indians made one final push and got as close as 60-56 with 4:22 remaining following a three-pointer by Sicilia LoSauro (Oviedo, FL/Oviedo HS). The Bears led by eight with just over a minute to play, but LoSauro converted a four-point play with 1:16 to go to pull Catawba within 68-64.
The Bears got a jumper by Safrit on their next possession and converted five-of-six free throws in the final 33 seconds to hold on. LaCourtney Rann (Charlotte, NC) also reached double-figures for Lenoir-Rhyne with 14 points and five steals.
LoSauro led Catawba with 22 points, while NeKeithia Howard (Macon, GA/Northeast HS) posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Brittany Higgins (Tacoma Park, MD/Blair HS) chipped in with 10 points.
