Softball Takes Split With Augusta State on Cobb's Third Shutout

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and visiting Augusta State split a softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field.  Catawba won the opener 1-0, while the Jaguars took game two 11-0.  The Catwaba Indians now stand at 8-2, while Augusta State is 10-2.

Catawba won the opener behind the solid pitching of freshman Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Lloyd Bird HS), who tossed her third straight shutout.  She allowed seven hits and struck out two.

Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschooled) provided the lone run as she homered in the bottom of the first.  The biggest threat for the Jaguars came in the fourth inning, but Ashley Roberts (Loganville, GA) was cut down at the plate after a double by Leann Barber (Wrightsville, GA) to left.

Whitesides had two of the five Catawba hits.  Roberts was 3-for-3 for Augusta State in the opener.

Augusta State used a five-run second to break open game two.  Leigh Robbins (Carolina Beach, NC) brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly then the Jaguars put together six straight hits with two outs.  Anna Tedder (Watkinsville, GA) had a two-run double.

The Jaguars would plate two runs over each of the final three frames.  Two came on a home run by Kayla Hicks (Loganville, GA) in the third.  Augusta State pounded out 16 hits, two each by Tedder, Hicks, Amber Hunt (Greensboro, GA), Beth Gerlach (Thomson, GA) and Alyssa Pingree (New Castle, CA).

Jacklyn Benenhaley (Mt. Pleasant, SC) picked up the win as she surrendered just two hits and struck out five.
