Green Helps Lacrosse Rally Past St. Andrews
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba scored the final four goals to rally past visiting St. Andrews for an 11-9 win in men’s lacrosse action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians even their mark at 1-1, while the Knights drop their opener.
Senior Kurt Green (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel HS) scored 14 seconds apart to erase a one-goal deficit and give Catawba a 10-9 lead with 5:47 remaining. The Indians were able to milk most of the clock then got a final tally from goalie Ben Huber (Westminster, MD/Westminster HS), who scored on a length of the field shot with 0.6 seconds left.
The Indians built a 5-1 lead after a quarter, getting two goals each from Green and Wayne Carbiener (Orlando, FL/Olympia HS) in the opening frame. The Knights rallied and kept Catawba off the board in the second period to close within 5-4 at the break. Zachary Miller (Middletown, DE) had two of the goals.
The teams alternated goals in the third period, leaving the score tied at 7-all heading to the final quarter. Chris Michela (Oak Hill, VA) and Matt Wagner (Crownsville, MD) gave St. Andrews a 9-7 lead with 9:25 left, but Marty Tuohy (Weynouth, MA/Weymouth HS) answered Wagner 22 seconds later to pull Catawba within a goal.
Green would get the tying goal on a pass from Nick Desper (Carrboro, NC/Chapel Hill HS) at the 6:01 mark then put the Indians up for good with 5:47 left. Huber would make a dozen saves for Catawba, while Nate Hull (Millersville, MD) played 57 minutes for the Knights and stopped 19 shots.
