Baseball Drops Two of Three in Weekend Series at C-N
JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Carson-Newman picked up a 3-2 win in the rubber-game of a three-game series with visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex. The win improved the Eagles to 12-6 overall and 3-3 in the SAC. The 18th-ranked Catawba Indians fell to 10-5 and 4-2.
Brett Hontz tossed the complete game for Carson-Newman, allowing just two runs off eight hits with 10 strikeouts. His biggest out came in the eighth inning with the Eagles up 3-2 as he struck out Ryan Query (Kannapollis, NC/Brown HS) with the bases loaded.
Catawba had grabbed the early lead on Chad Baker’s (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) run-scoring double with two outs. The Eagles went ahead with two runs in the fifth on singles by Jason Gray and Cory McGinnis.
David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC/Ledford HS) tied the game with a home run in the sixth, but Derek Long answered with a solo shot of his own in the Carson-Newman sixth with what proved to be the winning run. Catawba got one-out singles from Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) and Thomas in the eighth and after a fielder’s choice Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) was intentionally walked to load the bases for Query.
Alex Fairweather (Lenior, NC/W. Caldwell HS) took the loss fro Catawba. He pitched into the seventh and allowed three runs (two earned) off eight hits with four strikeouts. Thomas picked up three hits for Catawba. Long, McGinnis, Langdon Potts and Wesley Dozier each had two hits for the Eagles.
On Saturday, the teams split a doubleheader. Carson-Newman won the opener 7-4, while the Indians grabbed the nightcap 13-0. The Eagles snapped a 1-all tie by pushing across four runs (only one earned) in the fifth. C-N added two more runs in the sixth before Sands rallied Catawba with a RBI-single in the seventh and a two-run homer in the ninth.
Andrew O’Neal (King, NC/W. Stokes HS) had three hits for the Indians with Thomas, Sands, Query and Baker each added two. Dozier had three this for Carson-Newman,
Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus) tossed a four-hit shutout to give Catawba the split. He walked two and struck out two. Potts led off for C-N with a double, but was cut down at the plate by Sands to end the innings which proved to be the lone scoring chance for the Eagles.
Query and Baker had RBI hits to put Catawba up in the first inning and Matt Kepley (Greensboro, NC/Ragsdale HS) had a bases-clearing double in the fourth to cap a five-run frame for an 8-0 lead. Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) had a three-run homer in the seventh.
Catawba racked up 13 hits in the win with Query picked up three. Sands had two hits and scored four runs, while Lyerly had a pair of hits and four RBI.
