Marshall Leads Softball To Wins at Catawba Invitational
Sophomore sets school record with seven RBI vs. Kutztown
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba picked up three wins in early action at the Catawba Invitational Tournament being held at Salisbury Community Park. On Friday, the Catawba Indians claimed a 9-7 win over Wheeling Jesuit and a 7-3 win over Kutztown then topped Indianapolis 4-3 on Saturday morning. The Lady Indians have upped their record to 11-4.
On Saturday, Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) doubled home Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC/W. Rowan HS) with two-outs in the bottom of the seventh to give Catawba the win. White had opened the inning with a walk.
White put Catawba on top in the first inning with a two-out solo home run. The Greyhounds answered with a pair of solo shots of their own in the fourth as Jenny Swanson and Sara Agnew hit back-to-back homers with one out. Indianapolis stretched the lead to 3-1 in the fifth on a Swanson sacrifice fly.
Catawba got a run back in the fifth on a two-out single by Marshall, but MacKenzie White (Mt. Ulla, NC/W. Rowan HS) was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. The Lady Indians got a break in the sixth when Kathryn Geouge’s (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) two-out fly ball was dropped then almost caught with the bare hand of leftfielder Jessica Breeden before falling to the ground and allowing Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) to score the tying run.
Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Lloyd Bird HS) allowed seven hits over her seven innings to pick up the win and improve to 9-1. She struck out five. Jac White scored three runs, while Marshall had two hits and two RBI.
Marshall drove in all the run in Catawba’s 7-3 win over Kutztown on Friday night. The sophomore set a school record with the seven RBI, topping the record of six by Jac White and Amanda Mitchell. The Lady Indians trailed 2-0 in the fourth, when Marshall unloaded for a three-run homer. She put Catawba up 7-2 in the fifth with a two-out grand slam.
Geouge had three hits in the win, while Marshall and Sarah VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL/Wesley Chapel HS) each had two hits. Cobb allowed three run off eight hits in tossing the complete game. She had four strikeouts.
Catawba built a 7-0 lead after two innings of its opening game on Friday against Wheeling Jesuit. VanBuskirk and Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/W. Rowan HS) drove in runs in the first inning for a 2-0 lead then Jac White had a two-run single and Baker a two-run double in the second.
Aided by two Catawba errors, the Cardinals battled back in the middle innings and cut the lead to 8-7. Erin Witalison (Gold Hill, NC/Gray Stone Day) had a homer for Catawba in the fourth and Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschooled) gave the ladies an insurance run with a home run in the sixth.
Cobb left after three scoreless innings and returned in the sixth to get Catawba out of trouble. She got the win with four and two-thirds innings of shutout ball with four strikeouts. Whitesides had three hits and scored three times. Marshall and VanBuskirk each had two hits. Ashley McSweeney was five-for-five for Wheeling, while Angela Petros had three hits.
