Softball Falls to Barton in Eight Innings
SALISBURY, NC – Barton overcame nine errors and defeated Catawba 6-5 in eight innings at the Catawba Invitational Softball Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Salisbury Community Park. The Bulldogs improve to 3-8, while the loss drops the Catawba Indians to 11-5.
Catawba got an early 3-0 lead in the fourth, benefiting from five Bulldog errors in the frame. Barton answered back with three of its own in the fourth, getting RBI singles from Claire Severt and Courtney Bunch with Severt scoring the tying run on a wild pitch.
Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) put Catawba back on top in the fifth with a run-scoring triple after another Barton error. The Bulldogs again answered with singles from Mindy Tripp and Bunch to take a 5-4 lead.
The Lady Indians rallied in the seventh. Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC/W. Rowan HS) drew a two-out walk and Sarah VanBuskirk (Lutz, FL/Wesley Chapel HS) followed with a single. Baker delivered again with a double to plate the tying run. Catawba failed to score in the eighth and Kelly Sale won the game for Barton with a two-out single in the eighth.
Severt went the distance for Barton to grab the win. She allowed only one earned run off eight hits with five strikeouts. Jessica McFadden collected three of Barton’s 13 hits with Severt and Bunch providing two hits. Baker went 3-for-4 for the Lady Indians.
