Football blanks Wingate, 12-0

WINGATE, NC -- Catawba College's defense delivered a third shutout and its offense did just enough as the sixth-ranked Indians defeated host Wingate 12-0 in South Atlantic Conference football action at Belk Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Matt Gross (Hendersonville, NC) kicked two second quarter field goals and Scott Sensing (Thomasville, NC) threw a 47-yard score to Nick Means (Thomasville, NC) late in the third quarter to help the Tribe to a 3-0 start overall and a win in their SAC opener. Wingate falls to 2-1 and 0-1. The opening half was a battle of field position, which Catawba was on the losing end much of the time. After taking over near midfield on its initial possession, Sensing was sacked, and fumbled. Although the Bulldogs could not move the back, they pinned the Tribe at their own five. Following a short punt, Wingate moved to the 26, where Richard Straup failed to convert on a 43-yard field goal into a stiff wind. Two possessions later, Catawba was backed up at its own 11-yard line, and after a punt, Wingate began in Catawba territory. A Jeron Cain pass to Kenyatta Stackhouse brought the Bulldogs to the Tribe 25, but a holding call on the next play pushed Wingate back. Straup would fail from 50 yards away and Catawba had finally gained its much-needed field position. Catawba moved to midfield, where a Danny Jenkins (Kannapolis, NC) punt was mishandled, pinning the Bulldogs at their own one-yard line. Cedric Squirewell (Ridgeway, SC) returned the ensuing punt 17 yards to the Wingate 24, and four plays later Gross connected from 36 yards out for a 3-0 lead. The Tribe got the ball back with 1:58 in the half, at its own 30, then moved the ball to midfield with just under a minute left. Sensing hit Arnold Gaither (Turnersburg, NC) on consecutive passes for 15 and 14 yards to put Catawba on the 17 with 22 seconds remaining. Gross would come in on fourth down to convert from 39 yards out with three seconds left in the half for a 6-0 edge. Late in the third quarter, Sensing found Means down the sideline for a 47-yard score. Means made a leaping catch at the 20-yard line, over a Wingate defense, and after keeping his balance, raced into the end zone at the 1:19 mark of the third quarter. The Bulldogs returned the kickoff to the Catawba 44 and eventually moved to the Tribe three-yard line. Two penalties backed Wingate to the 13, and led to three straight incomplete passes to end the drive. Catawba has begun the season with three straight shutouts for only the second time in school history. The last was in 1934, when the Tribe allowed only six points in its first five games. The defense also limited an opponent to less than 100 yards for the third straight game. Wingate managed only 92 yards, 11 rushing and 81 passing. Marcus Bland (Garner, NC) led the Catawba ground unit, with 56 yards on 19 carries. Sensing was 15-of-22 for 141 yards and a score. Means and Squirewell, who had been held in check for the opening two games, combined for 13 catches. Means led the way with seven receptions for 89 yards and the score.
